A Reuters article has quoted Hideki Komiyama, Chief Executive of Sony Ericsson as saying there is, “still some time to go” in regards to their Android initiative and that, “It does require a lot of evaluation, as well as a lot of testing, a lot of acceptance from a consumer viewpoint.” Last we heard, Sony Ericsson planned on launching an Android phone this summer… does that count as “still some time to go”?

No disrespect to Reuters, but I have to contend a main point they attempt to make:

Most handset vendors are rushing out phones using Android software, hoping to benefit from consumer demand, but Sony Ericsson said it would be some time before its own offering was launched.

Most handset vendors? It has been 6 months and we still only have 1 Android Phone on the market so this is a gross overstatement. To be honest, as unfortunate as it is, Sony Ericsson may be playing their cards right. With still very few Android handsets out there the company doesn’t seem rushed… but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a sense of urgency. It seems they are taking the same approach as other manufacturers - ensuring the first Android handset they DO launch integrates whatever competitive advantages the company can pour into the device:

“Our focus is on how can we differentiate from the competitors using the same operating system,” Komiyama said, adding the firm was focusing its investments on user experience and user interface.

I don’t think this article tells us much of anything new and we could still very likely see a Sony Ericsson Android sometime this Summer. I do, however, find it interesting that Reuters would make such a bold statement about handset vendors rushing Android phones to market. Anyone else find that odd?
